Google has unveiled a redesign of Google Images, introducing a Pinterest-style discovery experience alongside AI-powered image generation to encourage users to browse, save and create visual content without leaving Search.
The update, announced as Google Images marks its 25th anniversary, transforms the platform from a traditional image search engine into a personalised gallery designed to surface visual inspiration based on users’ interests and browsing history.
The redesign comes with interesting features including the “For You” feed that continuously recommends images tailored to individual users. The gallery updates in real time, allowing users to explore topics ranging from fashion and travel to home decor and lifestyle inspiration.
Google is also expanding its Collections feature, to enable users to organise saved images into custom folders that can be revisited later for projects or inspiration.
The company is also integrating AI image generation directly into Google Search through AI Overviews. The feature allows users to create custom images from text prompts when suitable images are unavailable online.
The tool can also help users visualise ideas, such as redesigning rooms, planning travel outfits or experimenting with home décor concepts, powered by Google’s latest Nano Banana image generation mode.
The new upgrade is aimed to keep users inside its ecosystem to carry out inspiration and creative tasks, by combining image discovery, content organisation and AI creation within Search.
The redesigned Google Images experience will begin rolling out to desktop users in the United States over the coming weeks in English, while AI image generation in Search will expand to regions where Google’s AI image creation tools are already available.
