Representatives from three Nigerian universities have made a remarkable impact at the 2025 Huawei Global ICT Competition, securing two grand prizes and multiple first-place awards. The Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT Minna) teams won the overall grand prize and the grand prize in the Computing and Network Technology tracks.
In addition, the University of Ibadan (UI) team clinched first prize in the Cloud Technology contest, while Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) took top honors in the AI Innovation category. According to the competition organizers, two of the four grand prize-winning teams were Nigerian, and three Nigerian teams were among the six first-prize winners globally.
The global final featured 179 teams from 48 countries, held from May 20 to May 23, 2025, in Shenzhen, China, with the awards ceremony on May 24. African teams from Algeria, Morocco, Tanzania, and Nigeria stood out across various categories, including Practice, Innovation, and Programming.
Notably, Nigerian teams from FUT Minna also won grand prizes in the Practice Competition’s Network and Computing tracks, alongside teams from Algeria and Tanzania. Other African countries earned second and third prizes, with special awards recognizing women in tech and green development going to teams from Kenya, Uganda, and Ghana.
The Huawei Global ICT Competition, now in its ninth edition, attracts over 210,000 students and instructors worldwide. Since launching the ICT Academy in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2016, Huawei has engaged thousands of students and educators to advance ICT skills on the continent.
Ritchie Peng, Huawei’s Director of ICT Strategy and Business Development, highlighted the competition’s alignment with the vision for an Intelligent World 2030, emphasizing cloud computing, big data, and AI as key drivers of social progress. The event also featured the AI Accelerating Education Transformation Summit, showcasing AI’s role in digital education.
