OPay, one of Nigeria’s leading financial technology companies, has extended its ambitious N1.2 billion, 10-year scholarship programme to Kwara State Polytechnic. The announcement was formalized last week in Ilorin, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the institution’s Rector, Engr. Dr. Abdul Jimoh Mohammed, and OPay’s Chief Public Affairs Officer, Justin Zhang.
Under the scheme, 20 outstanding students from Kwara State Polytechnic will receive scholarships worth N300,000 each per academic year. This initiative makes Kwara Poly the first polytechnic to benefit from OPay’s long-term scholarship programme, which aims to support 400 students annually across Nigeria.
The scholarship is designed to ease the financial burden faced by many students, allowing them to focus on their studies and personal development. “Our scholarship support is to ensure that the dreams of talented scholars do not die. Through this 10-year scholarship program, we’re not just easing the financial stress of today’s students, we’re empowering a generation that will drive innovation and progress,” said OPay’s Managing Director/CEO, Dauda Gotring.
The inclusion of Kwara State Polytechnic is part of OPay’s broader vision to foster inclusive, nationwide impact. The company’s scholarship programme, first launched in 2024, already supports students at other institutions such as the University of Ilorin, where a similar N60 million scholarship was recently unveiled. The goal is to ensure that no student’s academic ambitions are cut short due to financial constraints.
Kwara State Polytechnic’s Rector, Dr. Abdul Jimoh Mohammed, expressed gratitude for the initiative, noting its potential to motivate students to excel academically and beyond. “We thank OPay for bringing the scholarship to Kwara State Polytechnic as this will have a huge impact on the students being awarded; giving them the motivation to excel in their academics and beyond,” he said.
Established in 2018, OPay is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and provides a wide range of financial services, including money transfers, bill payments, and merchant solutions. The company is recognized for its commitment to financial inclusion and its robust, reliable digital platform.
More students from diverse educational backgrounds are expected to benefit, equipping them with the resources needed to achieve academic success and contribute meaningfully to society. The company’s continued investment highlights its belief in the transformative power of education for Nigeria’s future leaders.
