MIT study finds ChatGPT lowers brain engagement in students writing essays

A new study from MIT shows that students who use ChatGPT to write essays have lower brain activity and perform worse than those who write without AI help.

Researchers at MIT Media Lab tested 54 people aged 18 to 39 as they wrote SAT essays using ChatGPT, Google Search, or no assistance. Using EEG brain scans, they found that ChatGPT users showed the weakest brain engagement, especially in areas linked to creativity and memory.

Over time, these users relied more on copy-pasting rather than thinking through their work. In contrast, students writing without AI had the highest brain connectivity, showing better focus and deeper thinking.

The study also noted that ChatGPT users struggled to recall their essays and felt less ownership of their work. This raises concerns as teen use of AI chatbots for schoolwork has doubled in the past year, potentially affecting learning and development.

Experts warn that relying too much on AI tools like ChatGPT could reduce critical thinking and memory skills. However, the study suggests using AI carefully, such as for brainstorming ideas rather than full essay writing.

This research shows the need for students and educators in Nigeria and beyond to balance AI use with active learning to protect brain engagement and academic growth.
