The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced a program designed to rigorously verify the criminal backgrounds of all educators across public and private institutions nationwide. Announced recently by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) on its X page, this new digital mechanism aims to ensure that those entrusted with the education of Nigerian children meet strict ethical and professional standards. The Ministry of Education, led by Dr. Tunji Alausa, backs this effort, which integrates criminal record checks into the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) digital platform. The development seeks to foster a seamless process of registering teachers, issuing licenses only to qualified individuals, and monitoring their conduct periodically to maintain accountability. According to the official statement, this campaign is designed to restore integrity to the education sector by entrusting the training of future generations to educators of unquestionable character and qualification. It aims not only to identify unfit instructors but also to combat certificate forgeries and teacher impersonation, issues that have persistently plagued the system. Dr. Alausa emphasized the importance of moral uprightness in the education sector. He added that the responsibility of nurturing young minds rest in the hands of well-equipped, principled teachers, and that the ministry aims to bring professionalism back into the classrooms. NOA also revealed that the vetting system will be embedded into the recently launched TRCN digital portal, which debuted in August and promises to streamline teacher registration and oversight through real-time data updates. While details regarding the sources for teachers’ criminal records remain confidential, implementation is expected to commence shortly. In addition, the Ministry is leveraging on the digital platform to elevate teaching quality across Nigeria. TRCN Registrar, Dr. Ronke Soyombo, explained that the portal will integrate cutting-edge tools, including AI-powered lesson planning, which will support the state-level disciplinary review boards to uphold standards throughout the teaching profession. Before now, the Nigerian education sector has faced numerous challenges such as insufficient funding, unqualified personnel, poor infrastructure, and an increasing number of out-of-school children which has contributed to a decline in academic standards. The digital portal’s launch is strategy by the government to modernize the teaching profession. The platform offers a reliable online repository of teachers’ information, professional development resources, and accountability tools, created in collaboration with the UK-funded Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria. Established originally by Decree 31 of 1993 and later codified by the TRCN Act CAP T3 of 2004, the council’s mandate is to reposition teaching as a respected and professional career through registration, licensure, and development.
Enugu State’s smart green schools to begin full academic sessions on September 22, ENSUBEB confirms
Enugu State is set to officially launch full academic activities at its innovative Smart Green Schools starting September 22, 2025, according to Prof. Hyginus Okibe, head of the Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB). The educational reform, by Governor Peter Mbah, is one of the ambitious projects in Nigeria, aiming to establish a modern school in each of Enugu’s 260 wards. These campuses are designed as futuristic learning centers featuring solar energy, digital classrooms equipped with tablets and interactive whiteboards, robotics and ICT labs, and smart farms promoting environmental stewardship, different from the usual convention classroom education. Prof. Okibe shared these updates during a recent gathering with ENSUBEB staff, emphasizing the importance of embracing the state’s digital teaching drive. He noted that board members will soon start consistent oversight and supervision of these new learning hubs to ensure smooth operations and impactful delivery. The approach to education in Enugu is evolving beyond traditional methods. The project integrates experiential learning, where students engage in practical, hands-on activities that encourage critical thinking and problem-solving, preparing them for global competitiveness. Teacher training at the Centre for Experiential Learning and Innovation ensures educators are well-equipped to facilitate this style. Additionally, the schools feature comprehensive welfare components including on-site health clinics, teacher housing, free uniforms, nutritious meals, and healthcare services. This holistic model is designed to support both students and staff, with assurances from Prof. Okibe . The board chairman encouraged staff to enhance their ICT skills to meet the evolving educational demands effectively. He praised their commitment so far, while urging a positive mindset focused on hard work and integrity, recognizing the transformative period ahead.
JAMB resets WAEC result portal, urges fresh submission from all candidates
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has instructed all UTME candidates who uploaded their WAEC results prior to the official release of the 2025 final results to revisit accredited centres and resubmit their information. This directive aims to ensure only authentic, verified data is used in the 2025 admission process. The directive comes after JAMB cleared all previously submitted results from its system to eliminate inconsistencies caused by premature uploads. Many candidates had originally submitted provisional WAEC records or awaiting results before the final release, leading to potential discrepancies within the admission framework. This fresh upload requirement applies to every candidate, irrespective of whether the new results differ from those initially submitted. JAMB emphasized that only the official final WAEC Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) outcomes will be recognised for university and tertiary admissions this year. The new development follows a technical glitch discovered by WAEC, which temporarily restricted access to its results portal to correct errors in grading key subjects such as Mathematics, English, Biology, and Economics. With those corrections in place, JAMB reopened its upload portal around August 20, urging candidates to promptly complete the re-upload at any of its accredited Computer Based Test centres nationwide. This reset was necessary to prevent admission complications and to maintain integrity within the admission framework, as earlier uploads had become unreliable due to the grading revisions and premature data submissions.Candidates are encouraged to comply swiftly to avoid exclusion from the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).
Federal Government launches digital platform to simplify teacher registration and certification in Nigeria
The Federal Government lauched a new online system designed to streamline the registration, certification, and development of teachers nationwide. The recently introduced portal, developed by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), offers a one-stop solution for teachers to register, renew licenses, and access professional development resources smoothly. It also facilitates exam scheduling and maintains a centralized database tracking educators’ career growth and performance.Minsister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, stressed that this advancement represents more than just technological innovation, it symbolizes a strategy anchored on professionalization, digital adoption, transparency, fairness, and aligning with international educational standards. The government is also rolling out a mandatory Teacher Ethics and Criminal Record Verification Framework to safeguard classroom integrity and ensure pupils’ protection.Private school administrators will be mandated to verify their teachers’ TRCN registration and ethical clearance through the platform’s integrated secure verification feature.Dr. Ronke Soyombo, TRCN’s Registrar, shared that the portal is part of a fast-track plan to digitalize council operations, enabling educators to complete registrations, download results, and print certificates from their homes without visiting government offices. The licensure exam process has been refined to focus on five critical subjects: foundational mathematics, literacy, digital literacy, safeguarding, and pedagogy. An AI-powered lesson plan generator is also set for deployment by October, aiming to provide teachers with adaptable and contextual instructional materials. This innovation is projected to increase certified teachers by 50%, boost child protection measures, and elevate Nigeria’s educational standards.Dr. Patrick Adeleye, CEO of TeckPlus Digital Solutions which developed the platform, stated that the program started 20 months ago to remedy challenges in teacher data management. The lack of accurate data on certified and qualified teachers had previously hampered learning outcomes nationwide.International experts welcomed the development. Chikodi Onyemerela, Director of Programmes at the British Council, called it a major step forward in transforming education in Nigeria, while Ian Attfield, Senior Education Adviser at the British High Commission, noted the platform’s potential to motivate educators through improved data transparency.Mohammed Isa, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, emphasized that the system will incorporate accessibility tools such as screen readers, sign language, and digital braille in alignment with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda to ensure inclusiveness. We are not merely introducing new technology; we are renewing our commitment to the dignity, growth, and future of our teachers – Dr. Alausa Registrar Soyombo added, With this system, teachers across Nigeria can conveniently register, access their results, and print their certificates from the comfort of their homes This digital transformation represents a leap toward modernizing Nigeria’s education system by empowering teachers through streamlined processes, enhanced transparency, and ethical standards.
JAMB reactivates portal for 2025 WASSCE result uploads for UTME candidates nationwide
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has reactivated the portal for uploading 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results for all UTME candidates across Nigeria. In a statement on its official X account on Tuesday, August 20, 2025, JAMB urged candidates to visit accredited centres to upload their results. Daily Tech Nigeria reported that the portal had been temporarily suspended to address technical issues following an error in the initial release of WASSCE results by WAEC. This upload is essential for admission processing, as JAMB verifies candidates’ O’level results before sending admission lists to universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Candidates who fail to upload their WAEC or NECO results risk being excluded from the admission process, even if they perform well in the UTME. JAMB emphasized using only accredited CBT centres to avoid errors and ensure data accuracy. The portal suspension starting August 14 was necessary after WAEC revised its initial results, which originally showed a low pass rate due to grading errors in core subjects such as Mathematics and English. After correction, the pass rate rose from 38.32% to 62.96%, benefiting over 1.2 million candidates. Meanwhile, about 191,000 results remain withheld over malpractice investigations. The reopening of JAMB’s portal now allows candidates to update their results and continue with the admission process for the 2024/2025 academic session. Candidates are advised to act promptly, as uploading accurate O’level results is critical to securing admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions this year.
