The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has raised a flash flood warning for Akwa Ibom and 13 additional states as the rainy season intensifies across the country. Akwa Ibom is currently facing the highest risk, particularly in urban and low-lying areas, according to NiMet’s alert released on June 14, 2025.
Other states under threat include Sokoto, Bayelsa, Zamfara, Plateau, Yobe, Bauchi, Abia, Nasarawa, Benue, Ogun, Ekiti, Delta, and Rivers. The agency noted that localized flooding has already been reported in several communities due to heavy rains, poor drainage, and blocked waterways.
NiMet urged residents to take precautionary steps such as clearing gutters and canals, avoiding floodwaters, relocating from flood-prone zones when necessary, and preparing emergency kits with essentials like water, food, and medications. They also advised turning off electricity and gas during floods to prevent accidents and staying updated through official weather channels.
The agency’s forecast predicts widespread thunderstorms and rainfall from June 14 to June 16 which was previously reported by Dailytech Nigeria, affecting many parts of Nigeria, with early morning and afternoon storms expected in northern and central regions.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and heed NiMet’s safety advice to mitigate the risks posed by the ongoing rainy season.
