The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning for widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across the country from Monday, July 7, to Wednesday, July 10, 2025.
NiMet’s latest three-day weather outlook, released on Sunday in Abuja, shows that both northern and southern states should expect stormy weather conditions. The agency urges Nigerians to get ready for possible disruptions caused by strong winds and heavy downpours.
Morning thunderstorms are likely in Taraba and Adamawa on Monday.
As the day goes on, Zamfara, Adamawa, Kebbi, Taraba, and Kaduna will also see storms and rainfall.
Northern states will start with sunny skies and some clouds.
Later, isolated thunderstorms and moderate rains are expected in Bauchi, Taraba, Kaduna, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, and Adamawa on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, thunderstorms are expected in Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, and Gombe in the morning.
More storms will hit Sokoto, Kebbi, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Taraba, Adamawa, and Zamfara later in the day.
Cloudy mornings are expected, especially in coastal areas like Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa.
Heavy rain showers will hit Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Ogun, Imo, Abia, Edo, Ebonyi, Enugu, and the entire coastal region by afternoon and evening. Similar patterns will continue through Wednesday.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kogi, Niger, Benue, Plateau, and Nasarawa are set for isolated storms and rain on Monday, with more expected across the region through Wednesday.
NiMet advises everyone to be careful during this period, especially in areas that often get thunderstorms. The agency warns that strong winds may come before the rain starts. Residents should secure loose items to prevent damage or injury, unplug electrical appliances during heavy rain, and avoid driving when the rain is intense. People are also told to stay away from tall trees to avoid falling branches.
Airline operators are encouraged to get airport-specific weather updates from NiMet before planning flights to ensure safety.
A NiMet spokesperson said, “We urge Nigerians to take these warnings seriously and follow safety guidelines to protect lives and property.”
With the rainy season in full swing, NiMet’s warnings are a reminder for everyone to stay alert and take simple steps to stay safe. More updates are expected if weather conditions change.
