“Own now, pay later” – FG launches C.L.I.C.K.D credit scheme for laptops, smartphones on instalment

The Federal Government has opened applications for a new consumer credit programme that allows Nigerians to purchase laptops, smartphones and tablets through flexible instalment payments.

The scheme, known as Credit for Laptops, Internet, Connectivity and Knowledge Digital Devices (C.L.I.C.K.D.), was launched in Abuja by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, alongside the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP), Uzoma Nwagba.

The programme is designed to improve access to digital devices for students, job seekers, freelancers and technology professionals who may not be able to afford the full cost of a device upfront.

The pilot phase begins with 1,000 locally assembled laptops for beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme. Seventy-seven participants in Abuja have already received their devices, while the remaining beneficiaries will be supplied in phases across the country.

According to the government, the initiative also aims to promote local manufacturing of technology hardware in Nigeria.

Applications are now open through the official CREDICORP C.L.I.C.K.D. portal. Applicants are required to provide details including their state of residence, employment status, monthly income, digital skills programme affiliation, the type of device requested and its intended use.

Applicants must also consent to eligibility verification by CREDICORP and its partners before submitting their applications.

Although the current pilot phase is officially limited to 3MTT fellows, the application portal also lists participants from programmes such as Andela Learning Community, Learn2Earn, ALX Africa, HNG Internship, AltSchool Africa, and Genesys Tech Hub. CREDICORP has not yet announced the interest rate, repayment period or any required down payment for the scheme.

The government said the programme is intended to support digital inclusion, improve access to technology and create more opportunities for learning, remote work, software development, content creation and business growth across Nigeria.
