Africa’s innovation story is entering a new chapter. As digital tools become more accessible and easier to create with, technology is no longer defined only by the people who build it. Increasingly, it is being shaped by people from every profession who are using it to solve real-world problems.
Technology Left the Lab
There was a time when technology had a gatekeeper.
It lived inside computer laboratories in schools, engineering departments and software companies. It belonged to programmers who spoke languages that most people could understand only after years of training. If you studied medicine, agriculture, journalism, law or business, technology often felt like a world of its own. It was useful, certainly, but it was never seen as your world.
Over time, that changed.
Technology crossed the boundaries that once defined it. It stopped being the exclusive domain of software developers and became a tool that every profession could use to solve real problems.
The shift became especially visible during the COVID-19 pandemic. As lockdowns disrupted daily life, hospitals introduced virtual consultations, schools moved lessons online and businesses adopted digital tools to keep operating. What began as an emergency response revealed something much bigger: technology was no longer simply supporting everyday life; it had become essential infrastructure.
In Nigeria and across Africa, that transformation did not end when the pandemic eased.
Governments accelerated digital services. Businesses invested more heavily in online operations. Millions of people who had never relied on digital platforms began using them for work, learning, healthcare and everyday transactions.
Few moments demonstrated this more clearly than Nigeria’s 2023 naira redesign and the cash scarcity that followed.
As cash became difficult to access, digital payments shifted from being a matter of convenience to one of necessity. Fintech platforms such as Opay, Moniepoint and PalmPay became everyday tools for market traders, transport operators, students and small business owners. The change was reflected in the numbers.
According to the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), Nigerians processed more than 5.6 billion instant payment transactions in the first half of 2024 alone, underscoring how quickly digital payments had become part of everyday life.
Across Africa, similar shifts were already underway. Mobile money services had expanded financial access in countries such as Kenya and Ghana, while a new generation of African fintech companies continued to drive digital inclusion across the continent.
According to the GSMA, Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for nearly half of the world’s registered mobile money accounts, highlighting the region’s growing leadership in digital financial services.
The same pattern can be seen across other sectors.
Education is no longer confined to four classroom walls. A student in Sokoto can learn from a lecturer in London, earn industry-recognised certifications online and collaborate with classmates across different countries.
Healthcare increasingly combines physical care with digital access, allowing patients to consult doctors remotely, book appointments online and access health information more easily than ever before.
Transportation has evolved as well. Ride-hailing platforms, GPS navigation and digital payments have changed how people move around cities, creating new expectations around convenience, speed and reliability.
More recently, artificial intelligence has accelerated this shift even further.
Tasks that once required specialised technical skills – from writing content and analysing data to designing graphics, building websites and developing simple applications – are becoming more accessible through AI-powered and no-code tools. A teacher can create lesson plans with generative AI. A journalist can analyse large volumes of information in minutes. An entrepreneur can prototype a digital product without writing a single line of code. Technology is becoming easier not only to use, but also to create with.
For years, success in technology was often measured by how well someone could write code. Today, it is increasingly measured by something broader: the ability to recognise meaningful problems, ask better questions and build solutions that improve people’s lives.
That is changing the conversation.
It is no longer, “Can you code?”
It is now, “What problem are you trying to solve?”
This shift is changing the ambitions of an entire generation.
Students who once imagined technology as a distant career path are beginning to see it as a way of thinking. They are learning to identify problems before chasing ideas, recognising that innovation begins with observation, curiosity and experimentation – not perfection.
If technology is no longer defined by who can write code, the next question becomes even more important: who gets to shape the future of innovation?
Across universities, startup communities and innovation hubs, a new generation of Africans is beginning to answer that question in unexpected ways.

Where Africa’s Next Innovators Are Learning
Technology becoming everyone’s business did not happen by accident.
It required more than faster internet, smarter smartphones or more powerful software. It required a different way of thinking.
Across universities, innovation hubs and startup communities, a quiet cultural shift has been taking place. Young people are no longer gathering simply to learn programming languages or build the next mobile app. They are learning how to identify problems, validate ideas, work across disciplines and create solutions that matter.
One example unfolded recently at the Google Developer Groups (GDG) on Campus at Ahmadu Bello University, where students from different academic backgrounds gathered for a startup-focused event themed “Building a Startup.”
At first glance, it looked like another campus meetup.
But there was something noticeably different about the room.
Not everyone there wanted to become a software engineer.
Some studied medicine. Others came from agriculture, business, journalism, engineering and other disciplines. They had different career ambitions, but they shared one thing in common: a desire to understand how innovation could help them solve problems in their own fields.
That diversity was intentional.
Speaking with DailyTech, the Campus Lead, Kabiru Kabirat, told reporter Rita Ishaya that the event was never designed exclusively for aspiring software developers.
“A medical doctor can attend this event, an agriculturist can attend, anybody can attend.”
Her point reflects a broader shift taking place across Africa’s innovation ecosystem.
Technology is no longer asking people to leave their professions behind before they can innovate. Instead, it is inviting them to bring those professions into the innovation ecosystem.
A doctor understands healthcare challenges differently from a software engineer. An agriculturist sees opportunities to improve food systems. A journalist recognises gaps in information, while a lawyer understands the policies and regulations that shape innovation.
Technology becomes more meaningful when those different perspectives come together to solve real problems.
That philosophy was reflected throughout the event.
Rather than asking participants to build an application or write code, organisers challenged them to pitch everyday objects as though they were presenting to investors.
On the surface, it looked like a simple communication exercise.
In reality, it captured one of the most important lessons in entrepreneurship.
People rarely invest in an idea simply because it is innovative. They invest because it solves a genuine problem and creates value for others.
Before founders write code, design interfaces or seek funding, they must first answer a more fundamental question: Why does this solution deserve to exist?
That is why innovation is increasingly becoming less about technology itself and more about understanding people.
When asked what advice she would leave with aspiring startup founders, Kabirat returned to the same theme.
“Don’t wait to feel ready. Readiness only comes when you do, not by waiting. The version of you capable of doing something great already exists, but you only meet that version by starting. Start small. Start messy. Start today. The world does not need your perfect idea; it needs your willingness to try.”
Her advice speaks to a misconception that extends well beyond entrepreneurship.
Many people delay building because they believe they need the perfect idea. Others assume they must master every technical skill before they can contribute to innovation.
Yet the conversations shaping Africa’s technology ecosystem increasingly suggest otherwise. Progress rarely begins with perfect conditions. It begins with curiosity, experimentation and a willingness to solve one problem at a time.
That is the mindset communities like GDG on Campus are helping cultivate, and it may prove just as important as any technical skill students learn along the way.

Kabirat’s advice extends beyond aspiring founders.
For years, conversations about technology centred on technical expertise – who could write code, build software or master the latest programming language.
Increasingly, those conversations are changing.
Across Nigeria and the rest of Africa, innovation is becoming more collaborative. Engineers are working alongside doctors. Designers are partnering with educators. Journalists are using artificial intelligence to analyse information and tell better stories. Farmers are adopting digital tools to improve productivity and reach new markets.
None of this diminishes the role of programmers. If anything, it highlights how important they remain. Every platform, every AI model and every digital service still depends on the people who build the technology that others use.
What has changed is who gets to participate.
Technology is no longer asking people to become software developers before they can contribute.
It is asking them to bring their own expertise to the problems that matter.
Perhaps that is the defining shift in Africa’s innovation story.
The future will still be built with technology.
But it will be shaped by people from every discipline who choose to solve problems together.
