The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) forecasted serious thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rains across much of Nigeria starting today Thursday, September 4, through Saturday, September 6, 2025. Residents are urged to prepare for potential disruptions due to the weather.
NiMet’s latest weather pronouncement, issued on Wednesday in Abuja, anticipates various intensities of storms affecting the northern states including Yobe, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Sokoto, Katsina, Gombe, and Borno. Morning and evening showers are expected throughout this three-day period, with some areas experiencing morning rains and others seeing thunderstorms as the day progresses.
In the north central region, the outlook predicts cloudy mornings followed by moderate to heavy downpours in Plateau, Nasarawa, Kogi, Benue, Niger, Kwara, and the Federal Capital Territory. Similarly, the southern states will witness overcast skies in the mornings with light showers in locations such as Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Imo, Bayelsa, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers, intensifying to more substantial rainfalls in the afternoon and evening.
The agency warned that these conditions could lead to temporary flooding in low-lying districts and disrupt transportation and outdoor activities. The rough weather is accompanied by strong winds, which may appear ahead of the storms in certain places.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has advised residents to take appropriate precautions as thunderstorms and heavy rains will impact many areas…securing loose items, avoiding travel during severe downpours, and disconnecting electrical devices during storms are essential steps to ensure safety – a NiMet spokesperson stated
NiMet encourages all Nigerians to stay vigilant and monitor weather updates through official channels to remain informed of evolving conditions.
